Coastal Christmas Dining Room: Easy Beach-Inspired Holiday Decor Ideas

A coastal christmas dining room works by mixing white and blue ornaments with natural textures like rope, burlap, and seagrass—think beach house meets holiday season. The color palette stays simple with crisp white, soft blues, and warm earth tones that feel more “weekend at the shore” than “Santa’s workshop.”
And honestly? It’s way easier to pull off than traditional Christmas decorating because the whole vibe is relaxed and forgiving.

Whether you’re styling your living room, dining room, or creating coastal christmas ideas for a centerpiece, you don’t need to overhaul everything. A few key pieces like a white coastal christmas tree, some nautical ornaments, natural textures and you’re basically there.
Let me show you our coastal christmas dining room makeover from old dark furniture that meets modern farmhouse coastal style, all decked out for Christmas.
How To Decorate A Coastal Christmas Dining Room (Without Looking Like A Souvenir Shop)
The secret to coastal christmas dining room decor?
Keep it simple and let natural textures do the heavy lifting. You’re going for “elegant beach house during the holidays,” not “every seashell we found on vacation is now an ornament.”

Here’s the dining room before. That darker farmhouse table and those Windsor chairs?
Leftovers from my very first house in my 20s when I was completely obsessed with primitive design—think Old Sturbridge Village vibes.
This dining set was my first major “I’m an adult now!” purchase, and I was ridiculously proud of it.
Fun fact: This dining room was actually featured in This Old House Magazine a few years back, which was such a pinch-me moment. You can see that entire photoshoot and dining room makeover here.
Fast forward to the makeover: we swapped in seagrass chairs and a white farmhouse table. The dining room hutch stayed (my gram gave it to me) and we kept the chandelier because it still worked with the new look.
Coastal Christmas Color Palette: What Colors Work Best?
Coastal Christmas colors stick to white, soft blues, and earth tones—no bright reds or greens required. The palette mimics what you’d see at the beach: sandy neutrals, ocean blues, weathered wood tones, and crisp white.
Here’s how the color palette breaks down for coastal christmas ideas:
- Base color: White or cream (for the tree, main pieces, and background)
- Accent color: Soft blue to light turquoise (ornaments, ribbon, small decor pieces)
- Natural tones: Beige, tan, light brown (burlap, rope, wood elements)
- Optional pops: Seafoam green or pale aqua (keeps things interesting without going off-brand)
We painted the walls Sherwin Williams Sea Salt—a soft blue-green that works year-round but looks especially good with coastal christmas dining room decor. Then we swapped the drapes and rug for something more modern and beachy.

Keeping coastal christmas decor simple in the dining room with wooden trees and a bowl of ornaments in the hutch, one Christmas throw pillow on a chair, and a centerpiece on the table.
That’s it! You don’t need to go overboard to make the theme work.
White Coastal Christmas Tree: Ornaments and Decorating Ideas
A white coastal christmas tree works best with a flocked finish and beach-inspired ornaments in white, cream, and soft blue tones.
The snowy flocking gives you that winter beach vibe—like sand dunes covered in frost while the coastal ornaments keep it from feeling too traditional.
Here’s what I used on our white coastal christmas tree:
- Rope garland instead of traditional ribbon or tinsel (gives it that nautical vibe)
- Distressed wooden sea-themed ornaments (fish, anchors, boats—all in weathered finishes)
- Blue netting ornament balls (they look like fishing net wrapped around glass)
- White and cream ball ornaments (matte finish, no sparkle)
- Natural starfish and shells (real ones from craft stores, not plastic)
- Burlap bow as the tree topper (way better than a star for this look)
The best coastal christmas tree ornaments are seashells, starfish, and seahorses in white or sand colors, skip anything too shiny or bright.
These work beautifully on a white flocked tree because they blend with the snowy texture while still adding interest.
How To Decorate A White Coastal Christmas Tree Step By Step
Start with a white flocked tree, add rope garland first, then layer in coastal ornaments from largest to smallest, and finish with a burlap bow at the top. The flocked (snowy) finish is key to the white coastal christmas tree look.
Here’s the basic order for decorating:
- Start with the tree lights (white or warm white, nothing colored)
- Wrap rope garland around the tree (use actual rope, not ribbon—it’s the signature coastal element)
- Add larger ornaments first (wooden pieces, bigger shells, statement ornaments)
- Fill in with medium ornaments (blue netting balls, white spheres)
- Tuck in smaller pieces (small shells, tiny starfish, mini ornaments)
- Top with a burlap bow (I used extra-wide burlap from Amazon—looks way better than a traditional star or angel)
The light brown burlap bow against the blue and white ornaments? It ties the whole color scheme together and keeps things from feeling too “Christmas-y” in the traditional sense.

Coastal Christmas Dining Room Table Centerpiece Ideas
A coastal christmas dining room table centerpiece works best with natural containers. Think wooden bowls, vintage sleds, or clear glass vessels filled with beach-themed elements.
Keep it low and simple so people can actually see each other across the table.
For our coastal christmas dining room table, I used leftover ornaments from the tree and filled a wooden sleigh to create the centerpiece. (Because why buy separate centerpiece supplies when you can just raid the ornament box?)
The sleigh centerpiece includes:
- White and blue ornaments in various sizes
- Real starfish scattered throughout
- Small shells tucked between ornaments
- A piece of driftwood for texture
Other coastal christmas ideas for your dining room table: sea glass in clear vases, a burlap table runner with scattered shells, wooden trees in different heights, or a collection of white pillar candles on a wooden tray with sand and shells around the base.

The sleigh from HomeGoods was perfect for this—I love how it looks filled with shells, starfish, and white ornaments.
More Coastal Christmas Ideas For Your Home
Looking for more coastal christmas ideas beyond the dining room and tree? Here are some other options that work with a coastal theme throughout your home:
- Small boxwood trees in white pots (we used these in our Christmas kitchen)
- A large glass bowl filled with white and blue ornaments
- White poinsettias in natural fiber baskets
- A collection of small wooden trees in varying heights with candles
- A simple sleigh filled with pinecones and white-painted branches
- Hurricane vases with sand, shells, and battery-operated candles
- Rope-wrapped candlesticks on the mantel
- Driftwood pieces as wall decor with white lights
Pro tip: Buy your burlap ribbon extra wide—the narrow stuff looks cheap and doesn’t have the same impact. I grabbed mine on Amazon, and it made all the difference for that tree topper bow.
The best part about coastal christmas ideas?
They feel relaxed and low-pressure, which is exactly what the holidays should be!

The dining room looks just a wonderful as the other rooms! I didn’t think I would like the coastal look but, you made is look gorgeous. You cannot go wrong with that blue you chose or the silver, sand, and white. TFS.
Thank you! Yes this is my first time decorating a Coastal tree. I am kinda digging it!!! ha
Hey there! Where is your chandelier from??
It’s old and from Home Depot like 10 years ago! 🙂
Gorgeous room and tree. TFS
Absolutely beautiful Coastal Themed Room Jess! And that bow! Lol!!! I have to agree. My mom makes a mean bow! Wish I had that talent as well!
Thank you Nicole!!
I just love your coastal dining room. I live in Florida and am working on my coastal tree. I have the same basic color scheme white, silver, blue. I have lots of starfish, sand dollars and some shells. I needed some new ornaments this year since I went from a 7 ft. to a 9 ft. tree. Thanks for the ideas. I did find some at Kirklands. I also loved the rope as garland idea and picked some up at Home Depot. I wish I could find the sleigh at Homegoods, but mine did not have it. That made such a wonderful table centerpiece and I already have tons of things I could fill it with. So glad I found your site! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you Lea Anne! You could always fill a bowl too for a centerpiece or even a wooden box or basket!!
Your dining room looks amazing! May I ask where your chandelier is from?
Thank you ! It’s actually 10+ years old and from Home Depot! 🙂
I’m all about red for Christmas, but that is one GORGEOUS Christmas tree!
Thank you Sue!
Could you tell me the wall color (greenish/blueish)? Thank you!
It’s rainwashed by Sherwin-Williams 🙂
I love it!! Where did you get your Dinning chairs from? I’ve been looking for those everywhere.
Thank you! They are from Wayfair. Here is my affiliate link to the chairs:) http://rstyle.me/n/b54ijvxqin
Jessica you did such a great job with the coastal vibe in this room, I love it!
