Today I’m sharing a weekly update as it’s been nothing short of a whirlwind, packed with demolition, design, and digital course development. Let’s take a look at the 1990’s kitchen Jim is renovating, our office makeover and an update on our new course teaching you how we make money with Airbnb.

For those of you who love family stories, you will enjoy my dad and the dog sitting at our kid sized “patio table” in our kitchen.

The 1990’s Kitchen Renovation is Underway

Jim and his crew have officially taken the first steps toward transforming a dated 1990’s kitchen into a modern functional space.

The kitchen belongs to a family who purchased their home for over two decades ago and is now looking forward to updating it with a complete overhaul.

Jim’s crew gutted the the old kitchen to make way for the new shaker-style cabinets, sleek countertops, cutting-edge appliances, and stylish new flooring.

For those of you who are wondering, the cabinets and countertops were sold on Facebook so they were not trashed.

Stay tuned, it’s going to be beautiful!

For those of you wondering why the clients wanted to update this kitchen, here are some statistics of why and how a kitchen is considered a profitable renovation.

Why a Kitchen Renovation?

Apart from the obvious aesthetic uplift and functionality boost, did you know that a kitchen renovation is one of the best investments you can make in your home?

On average, homeowners can recoup around 54% to 77% of their kitchen remodel costs through added home value, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Over the years, we’ve shared several kitchen transformations on the blog, each contributing not just to a home’s beauty but significantly to its market value.

In-Home Office Makeover

If you’ve been keeping up with us on Instagram (@fourgenerationsoneroof), you’re in the know about the latest addition to our team—an assistant to help with the administrative side of things.

This move is all about Jim and I scaling our businesses, getting organized, and, yes, finally making our loft/office space both pretty and practical.

You may remember this loft makeover (above) after I got divorced over 6 years ago.

It was the “lady loft” which I created as a separate TV space and space for me to work out of.

When Jim moved in over 3 years ago, we combined this loft with an office space for both of us that took on a life of it’s own – in a nut shell, we both got so busy that our office space became neglected and ultimately, became a state of chaos.

You will notice above that we added a wall at the far end with a sliding door to create an additional room – which now, the room is turning into Jim’s office (yay for having a door to close so I can’t see all Jimbo’s papers! 😂) and we will have 2 desks in the combined TV area for me and our new assistant.

Working from home is no joke and while many will say working from home is great, it can be a source of stress and overwhelm if you are not organized!

This week, we said goodbye to the old carpet and welcomed engineered hardwood floors.

The mismatched furniture is out, and this weekend, we’ll be setting up sleek new desk units that have been waiting in our garage for two years!

It’s a classic case of the plumber’s house having leaky faucets. Jim’s a contractor and I’m a designer by trade and our own space is a disaster!

The new flooring is looking great and this weekend, we are installing the new desks and will be finally organized!

Nothing like hiring someone to work in your home “with” you to light a fire under our butts to get organized!

Family Update: The Patio Table

In a week filled with big projects and business moves, it’s the little family moments that truly resonate.

As you know, we renovated our kitchen from top to bottom by painting the kitchen cabinets, installing new countertops and backsplash and finally refinishing our hardwood floor.

We completed the kitchen remodel last June and would you believe me if I told you we still don’t have a kitchen table!

With our kitchen table now gracing my niece’s home (my niece moved into her first apartment), we’ve found ourselves gathering around a patio table temporarily repurposed for indoor use.

It’s a reminder of the importance of adaptability, resourcefulness, and the joy found in simplicity.

Watching my dad sit there, grilled cheese and tomato soup in hand, feeding his sidekick, Mr. Bentley, I’m reminded that it’s not the furniture that makes a home, but the love and laughter shared within it.

Wrapping Up

As we look back on this weekly update, it’s clear that whether we’re tearing down walls, laying new floors, or sharing a meal at an unconventional kitchen table, it’s all about moving forward, growing, and cherishing every step of the journey.
