Loft living room ideas are everywhere online, but sometimes the best makeover is right in your own attic. Our wide open loft has been everything from a bedroom to an Xbox zone, and now it’s officially my “Lady Loft” — a cozy living room hangout tucked under a sloped ceiling.
Today I’m sharing how we pulled this space together and why it works so well as a third-floor lounge.

Loft Living Room Before
This space started as my son’s bedroom and hangout with his friends, but it was too far removed from the rest of the house.

Bedtime felt like he was sleeping in a completely different wing, so eventually we moved him out and reclaimed the loft.

We even built a closet in the corner knee wall to give this oversized room much-needed storage and help define zones.

Loft Living Room Furniture
The sectional is deep and comfy, perfect for movie nights and binge sessions.

Paired with a rustic barn media console and simple coffee table, the furniture creates a defined TV zone without overwhelming the open space.

My dad and I even framed a closet into the slanted ceiling.

It hides clutter and creates a natural office nook behind the French doors.

Greenery, real or faux, makes the loft feel less stark and more inviting. With 600 square feet up here, plants soften the angles and fill awkward corners without adding clutter.
Loft Decorating Ideas on a Budget
Loft decorating ideas for a living room work best when you balance cozy comfort with smart space planning.

Use neutral furniture as a base, then layer in rugs, greenery, and a few statement pieces to soften the wide-open feel of a loft.

Cozy Loft Living Room Ideas on a Budget
Simple swaps like rugs, pillows, and greenery can turn a wide-open loft into a warm, inviting hangout without overspending.

Common Questions
How do you place furniture in a loft with a sloped ceiling?
Put taller pieces on the high wall, use the low wall for storage, and float your sofa to define a seating zone.
What size rug works best in a loft living room?
Choose an oversized rug that anchors the sectional and chairs. At least the front legs should sit on the rug to unify the zone.
How can I add storage in a loft?
Use the knee wall for built-ins or closets with doors. Closed storage calms the view and keeps the open feel intact.

The space turned out just gorgeous Jess! I love the color scheme and the furniture is beautiful! What a wonderful space to relax or work!
Thank you Kim!
So lovely. A great hideaway. Yes ur son will want to rethink his move. Oh well heโll adjust.
I think ur accent chair cushion might be upside down. I think if u flip it the pattern might match better.
Good catch on the cushion! I will try that ๐
Amazing makeover! I actually love the all white and the beams will add warmth. The furniture is gorgeous. Love R&F furniture! How about adding an electric fireplace down the road?
I totally agree about the electric fireplace in fact, I almost got the media console that Raymour and Flanigan had that was electric ๐
It turned out really pretty! I’ve always loved sectionals. That’s a great idea to add some color by the faux greenery, rather than having to paint.
Hi Brenda! I love sectionals too and this one is comfy and cozy ! Plants are always my go-to item ๐
Beautiful space! I hope you’ll enjoy many happy hours there. I agree that a different color paint would look good, and I’m sure you’ll probably do this anyway, but I think it definitely looks best to paint the knee wall and the ceiling all the same color, maybe pink like some of the pillows or a dark gray to contrast with the light colored carpeting. I’m not sure about beams, but I love the idea of adding some wallpaper or maybe a mural.
Thank you Jeanine!! Yes, the knee walls and ceiling definitely NEED something!! ๐
Wow. This space is lovely. You did a wonderful job of creating a relaxing beautiful space.

Thank you Rosie!!!
This loft is looking beautiful. A suggestion for the beams. You know you can use hard foam for faux beams. You can get it cut to whatever size you want. On one production we did, we scraped and scraped to make the beams look “real” and they did. We put a variety of colors on them and then rubbed them to get in to the cracks and crevices to appear old. Worked like a charm and easy to put up. One thing not to do is box beams as they always look “odd”. Frankly, I think beams will bring the ceiling visually down.
I wouldn’t do anything to make the closet stand out nor would I paint the trim around the closet door to match your baseboard color. The whole thing should be painted whatever wall color you use. It’s crazy when I see air returns in ceilings and walls and they have been painted the color of the baseboard, that’s a no no, just paint the same color as the ceiling or walls and not in a different sheen.
Wishing you well on your next adventure.
BEAUTIFUL! You and your Dad are so talented and blessed. Enjoy it in good health. TFS
thank you!! ๐
I am in awe of you. We recently had our upstairs renovated by someone. I need to build a closet in my bedroom. The wall that it will be built on has a slanted ceiling. My husband keeps suggesting that we try to do it ourselves. I saw your step-by-step and I don’t want to mess it up. Any idea how much it would cost to have someone build it for me. It would be about half the size of yours?
