When it comes to your home’s first impression, your front door plays a huge role. It’s the entrance to your home, and it has the power to make a statement. If you’re looking to enhance your home’s curb appeal, there’s no better way to do it than by focusing on your front door. Today I am sharing the art of the front door makeover, from the ultimate upgrade to budget-friendly DIY projects that can transform your entryway.
Over the years, I think I have decorated 100’s of front doors for each season and since meeting Jim, I’ve watched him install several new front doors. Between the two of us, we have tons of ideas to refresh or completely makeover the front entrance to your home.
The Ultimate Upgrade: A New Front Door
Exterior doors are one of the best investments you can make in your home. Lets take a look at several front door makeover ideas to get your creative juices flowing!
Craftsman Door With Sidelights
Let’s start with the showstopper – a brand-new front door. Installing a new front door that is wider and taller than your existing one is the most transformative change you can make to your entrance. This single modification can redefine your home’s curb appeal, giving it an instant facelift.
If you are looking to replace your front door and install a new one, click through this post, how to install a wider and taller front door, where Jim expanded the existing door frame and installed a new door with sidelights and a transom letting in a ton of light! The new door reflected our personal style and looked beautiful from the front yard.
Art Deco Inspired Door With Sidelight
Another front door makeover that we recently completed at the ranch home is one of my favorites.
The Art Decor inspired black front door that we picked was unique in that we didn’t have room for 2 sidelights but Jim reframed the existing rough opening of the door to accommodate a larger door and the half view style glass allows natural light to flow into the home while still providing privacy.
Imagine a door that not only welcomes you but also stands as a statement piece. It’s the kind of upgrade that not only boosts curb appeal but also increases the value of your home. A fiberglass door can provide better insulation, enhance security, and offer a fresh aesthetic. See this door installation here.
Easy Front Door Makeover
We understand that budget considerations can be a factor. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered with some budget-friendly DIY projects that can refresh your front door and make a world of difference.
Paint Your Front Door
A fresh coat of paint is an easy update and most impactful changes you can make. Choose a paint color that complements your home’s exterior, and watch as your front door comes to life.
Whether you opt for dark colors like black, a bold hue or a classic traditional shade, a painted front door can instantly boost curb appeal.
- Start by cleaning the existing door and lightly sand if necessary.
- Using a paint brush or a spray gun, apply 2 coats of paint to achieve the desired look.
- Be sure to use exterior paint for durability. Even if the outside of your front door is covered by a front porch, you still need to use exterior paint. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the next.
Update Door Hardware
Don’t underestimate the power of door hardware! Upgrading your doorknob, lockset, hinges, and even a decorative door knocker can make your door look brand new. It’s an easy project with a big impact.
- Remove the old door handle and install the new door handle and if you are loving the new technology for home security, consider a smart lock! We have several of these smart home door locks and love them.
Update House Numbers & Welcoming Details
The proper sized house numbers for your entryway play a big role in curb appeal. I know it sounds silly but if you can’t see the numbers from the road, what good are they! On the other hand, flimsy and rusted house numbers can do more harm than good when it comes to curb appeal.
You can see below that when we added a new portico at our previous house, we installed a new door, house numbers and hardware. Click through this post to see the front door before!
Large house numbers are not only practical but also add a touch of style. Consider installing large, easily readable numbers. forget to add a decorative welcome mat too as it’s the first thing guests see when they arrive.
Greenery and Landscaping
Potted plants, hanging baskets or a well-maintained garden can frame your front door beautifully. Greenery not only adds color but also life to your entrance. Consider placing a charming Boston fern by the door for a pop of color.
Remove Storm Door
This update is a little controversial as many love having a screen but honestly, a storm door takes away from the beauty of your front door. Consider a retractable screen instead. If you have the budget, companies like Phantom doors, install luxury retractable screens that are durable and hidden in the wall!
Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting fixtures can work wonders for curb appeal. Consider lantern-style sconces, a pendant light above the entry, or path lighting to guide the way. It’s an upgrade that enhances both safety and aesthetics.
