This DIY Christmas shelf project takes just two hours and costs about $25. Perfect for Christmas shelf styling. No fancy tools required!
This easy DIY shelf is as straightforward as it gets, build a basic pine shelf in two hours, mount it wherever you need display space, and you’ve got the perfect spot for seasonal decorating. Minimal tools, maximum impact!

What You Need for This Beginner DIY Shelf
Materials for the Shelf:
- 1×9 pine board (cut to your desired length, mine was 30″)
- Wooden L-brackets (painted white)
- White semi-gloss paint
- Wood filler
- Medium-grit sandpaper
- 2.5″ wood screws
Tools:
- Saw (or have the store cut it)
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Paintbrush
Total cost: About $25.
Quick tip: Standard decorative shelves work best at 8-12″ deep. Mount at a comfortable height for easy styling access.
How to Build Your Easy DIY Shelf (Step by Step)
Step 1: Prep the wood. Fill any knots or holes with wood filler, let dry, then sand everything smooth. The extra 10 minutes of sanding is what separates DIY-looking from store-bought.

Step 2: Paint it. Two coats of semi-gloss white (or whatever matches your trim). Let the first coat dry completely before adding the second. I painted the brackets white too.

Step 3: Find your studs. This isn’t optional! Drywall alone won’t hold the weight. Use a stud finder, mark at least two stud locations with painter’s tape, and use a level to mark your height.
Step 4: Mount it. Screw brackets into studs first, then set your shelf on top and secure it. Done.

Simple Christmas Shelf Styling Ideas
For my Christmas shelf styling this year, I kept it super simple. One decorative pine tree in the center with a gold ball ornament on either side. Three pieces, done in 2 minutes.
Why I went minimal this time:
- The symmetry feels clean
- It doesn’t compete with the rest of the room
- Easy to swap out for other seasons
- Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for fussy styling
But here’s the thing, you could absolutely do more here. Layer in some greenery, add candles, create a whole scene.
This DIY shelf can handle it. I’ve styled it different ways throughout the year, and sometimes more is exactly what the space needs.
It really just depends on your mood, your room, and how much time you want to spend messing with it. This particular Christmas, simple felt right.

Simple DIY Shelf Mistakes to Avoid
- Sand more than you think you need to. Rushed sanding shows.
- Don’t skip the stud finder. I tried once. The shelf pulled away from the wall in two weeks!🫣
- Style it however feels right to you. There’s no wrong answer here!
Your Questions Answered
15-20 pounds if mounted to studs properly. Perfect for Christmas decor, not heavy books.
You have two options: adjust your shelf placement to hit the studs (they’re usually every 16″), or use heavy-duty toggle bolts. For light decorative shelves under 10 pounds, quality anchors work. But for anything heavier or that you’ll be grabbing items from, move the shelf to hit those studs. It’s worth it.
Drywall alone can’t support weight, it’ll rip right out. Studs are the wood framing behind your walls, and that’s what actually holds things securely. Think of drywall like wrapping paper and studs like the gift box underneath, you need to attach to the box, not the paper.
Yep! Just sand smooth, use pre-stain conditioner, then stain. I prefer painted for my space, but stained wood looks great too!

The Bottom Line on This 2 Hour DIY Shelf Project
This easy DIY shelf gives you year-round styling space for the cost of a throw pillow and less time than a Target run!😉 Build your Christmas DIY shelf Saturday morning, style it however you want, and enjoy it all season.
This same simple shelf approach works anywhere you need display space (hallways, bathrooms, above desks, entryways). So grab your drill, find those studs, and give yourself a weekend win. You’ve got this!
