Let’s talk about the best spooky halloween mantel ideas that are not ugly! It’s that time of year again with Halloween right around the corner. Transitioning from Fall into the Halloween season can be so much fun and creating a spooky mantel in your living room combined with your existing Fall decorations can be simple if you follow these simple steps.

Let’s take a look at how I incorporated spider webs, halloween garland, creepy spiders and a purple and black color scheme to create a classy spooky look.

Halloween decorations can vary from sophisticated to gaudy. I prefer more of a classy sophisticated halloween fireplace featuring a handful of spooky elements mixed with traditional Fall decor.

Halloween Mantel Ideas

The best part about decorating a halloween mantel is you can repurpose your existing Fall decor.

My favorite halloween mantel decorations:

  1. Candles: Elegant black candlesticks paired with white candles create a classic and spooky atmosphere. The flickering candlelight adds an eerie charm to your mantel.
  2. Pumpkins: White, black, purple or metallic pumpkins are versatile and stylish choices. You can arrange them in various sizes and shapes for a chic Halloween display.
  3. Spiders and Spider Webs: Incorporating faux spider webs (lace) and creepy spider decorations can instantly give your mantel a spooky look. Place them strategically to create a spooky look.
  4. Wreaths: Halloween-themed black wreaths, such as those featuring black feathers, satin ribbons, or faux flowers, make fantastic focal points above your mantel. They add a touch of elegance to your decor.
  5. Vintage or Antique Accessories: Old books, lanterns, and vintage-style framed art can add a sense of history and mystery to your Halloween mantel.

An everyday like this mirror  or this mirror (a little cheaper) serves as a backdrop on our stone fireplace mantel for each season and for Halloween, I decided to hang a large black spider to the mirror.

Fall Mantel Decor

Last year, my Fall decorations with pumpkins mixed perfectly with a handful of purple and black halloween decorations and white pumpkins.

Mixing string lights and spiders also is a great way to infuse the spooky side of halloween.

Halloween Mantel Garland

For a simple look, I used realistic faux dried wheat grass in a autumn colors and layered in black lace from the dollar store. Black cat garland is also a fun way to create a spooky scene that the whole family will love.

How to get a similar look:

  1. Layer halloween wall art or a halloween mantel sign on the fireplace mantel
  2. Add a halloween skeleton or halloween figure that sits on the mantel
  3. Mix in fall leaves or autumn dried flowers as a Fall fireplace garland on top of the mantel
  4. Mix halloween mantel string lights across the mantel to add a fun twinkle at night

DIY Fall Mantel Decorations

The majority of the Halloween decorations also serve as Fall decor so once Halloween passes, I will remove the black themed Halloween decor and in minutes, my Fall themed autumn living room will be back.

You can soften a stone fireplace by added rattan or seagrass baskets, draping a throw blanket over the basket or add leaves for mantel garland along with a clothed decorative skeleton.

The black fabric on the skeleton softens the cold stone!

Use a small scarf from a halloween costume if you can’t find black lace. You can find black fur pieces in the ribbon or sewing section of Michaels Crafts if you are looking to create this look on  your own Fall or Halloween mantel.

Simple DIY projects like making paper bats, witch hats, black crows or a hanging black wreath are also simple items to decorate your mantel.

Black Candle Holders

There are different ways to incorporate black candle holders in your halloween setting.

Black candle holders not only look great on a mantel but also on a coffee table. As you can see below, the coffee table looks great with black and white color scheme.

Try pairing simple items like black candle holders, white candle sticks, faux pumpkins and a halloween sign on your coffee table or on your fireplace hearth.

Can you mix Fall and Halloween decorations?

YES! You can absolutely mix Fall and Halloween decorations! Fall throw pillows, pumpkins and gourds together with your Halloween decorations look great.

Depending on when you start decorating for Fall, I start Labor Day weekend, which means my Fall decor will tie right in when I start decorating for halloween in mid-October.

My Fall Plaid and checkered pillows are very popular this Fall season and I absolutely love how the Halloween witch pillow ties in the spooky Halloween theme.

The black candlesticks look fabulous on the coffee table and can be used year round in other parts of my home.

The white firefly tree lights on the mantel are perfect for Fall and Winter as they look so cozy at night lite up. They will look great with holiday garland during Christmas too.

Halloween Mantel Decor

As I mentioned earlier, the firefly lights and the pre-lite tree branch lights add a pretty twinkle at night on the halloween mantel.

You also string christmas lights on the mantel too if you didn’t want to invest in firefly lights but these lights from Amazon are a good length for your mantel and affordable.

The Fall decorations and faux dried flowers were actually trimmed from a bouquet that I purchased at HomeGoods.

Black Halloween Decorations

The black mantel garland is a small scarf from a halloween costume. You can find black fur pieces in the ribbon or sewing section of Michaels Crafts if you are looking to create this look on  your own Fall or Halloween mantel.

You can’t go wrong with the color black when decorating for Halloween.

Black candle sticks in varying heights are a perfect Fall decoration for either a mantel or a coffee table.

The key though is to mix in other non traditional Halloween colors to keep the room from looking like a freaky gorey space, unless of course you want gore!
