Our new DIY bathroom (click link to see the demo) renovation is finally completed. When I tell you that this 8×10 space made me cry and almost jump out the tiny window in this room, I am not kidding. You will see why in a minute. I really enjoy DIY projects and love the idea of the finished product but this little o’l budget diy bathroom renovation put my patients to the test. The only thing that kept me going was that my husband and I were sharing a bathroom and I needed to get rid of him! Oh the mess and oh the noise in the morning. I was on a mission to complete the new bathroom. The original bathroom was a 1970’s pink color scheme which we demolished earlier this year.

Here is the bathroom before:

1970's old pink outdated bathroom

You can see I tried to paint the tile and that didn’t go so well. My dad agreed to help demolish and remove the pink tub. Thank goodness because 2 hours of taking off the tile was not fun. I posted a couple months ago about the newly framed closet and shower stall that we added in this space. Here is a picture of the original vanity minus the drawers. The quality of these pictures are not that great as these were taken with my old camera. It’s so strange to think that this was my bathroom when I was a kid.

DIY Bathroom Renovation with my dad

The deal I had with my dad was he helped get rid of the existing tub and tile and I would help him add a closet and shower stall. Once we installed the closet and shower, I was on my own. That was when my anxiety set in. Like I said, I love a challenge and do it yourself projects but this was over my head and the old saying, “learn as you go” was now a reality. This project started earlier this year with the demolition and the addition of the shower and closet and then came to a halt once that was completed. I got busy doing our family room, dining and mudroom makeovers. However, I started back up again (that’s when my husband moved back into our master bath) about a month ago and finally it’s done!

DIY bathroom paint colors

Sherwin Williams provided me with complimentary paint for this makeover and I ‘m loving their new gray colors. I used their new line called Emerald. I painted the original vanity with Sherwin Williams gray clouds, the walls with rhinestone and the trim in extra white (semi gloss).  The original walls are old and somewhat uneven so I added 3 1/2 inch boards to create texture and add character. The boards are painted the same as the walls in rhinestone. I chose a satin finish which I think offers the perfect sheen for the walls and vanity. I have always been a big fan of Sherwin Williams paint and I was so excited when they contacted me about this project.

Now for a look where the old pink tub was.

It’s quiet dramatic in my opinion and yes, this is the part that almost killed me. We installed an inexpensive fiberglass shower stall and once it was installed, it looked like it needed a little something to jazz it up. I did not have plans of adding tile but you know how that goes, once you get started, you can’t stop. Once I started tiling inside the shower, I decided to wrap it around the new closet. I love how it looks!

DIY bathroom tiling with mosaic 12×12 pieces

The glass mosaic tile is called Venetian and I purchased it at Lowes. The tile consists of a sand stone color, blue/green and gray glass. The door is painted in Sherwin Williams Cloud Gray to match the vanity. Instead of using a standard shower curtain, I used an 84″ white cotton panel from Target.

I wanted the shower to appear as large as possible and I think that hanging the shower curtain higher creates that illusion. Don’t you? No worries, I will be hanging an extra long shower liner inside with drapery rings.

I installed bingo brackets that I purchased at Home Depot and added thick stand alone glass shelving. I think the tile and shelving are by far my favorites in this space. I was surprised at how easy the bingo brackets were to install. I will provide a tutorial soon on how to install them.

One of my goals, besides kicking my husband out of our shared master bathroom, was to provide him with a spa like feeling bath that he would love. When we go away on vacation, one of the things he loves most is the hotel baths that are newly renovated and spa like. I wanted the overall feel to be a modern cottage look with a spa feel. I think we accomplished that. This next picture shows the planks that I added to the wall.

I purchased 1/4″ MDF and cut to 3 1/2 inch strips and created squares as a wall treatment. I’m sure there is a name for it, I just don’t know what it is!

I love the texture that the wood adds and this project was honestly, a pain in the butt. A close second behind the tile. If I had someone helping it would have been easier but most of this space was completed during the day when everyone was at work so I was on my own. I will also provide a tutorial soon on the wall treatment.

Target provided complimentary holiday towels and accessories for this makeover and the pops of red are absolutely perfect paired with the gray and white color scheme. You can imagine my excitement when I got an email from the PR department at Target last month wondering if I would like to have some complimentary holiday decor. It even came gift wrapped in a huge box!

I love the fresh holiday greens and berries paired with Target’s holiday candles. The soap pump and tray below are winter white featured in a cable knit pattern also from Target’s Threshold Holiday line.

The tray, tumbler and soap pump are the perfect coordinate against the silver mirror.

The additional closet space is perfect for my husband’s work attire. We have one small closet in our master bedroom (which we were sharing) and now, my husband has this closet all to himself. Now he just gets up in the morning and leaves the room! Yay! No noise from the adjoining master bathroom or rummaging through the closet.

My husband asked me if these were real gifts for him. Sorry honey, just an inexpensive way to add some character to the room.

I love how the glass shelves and nickel colored brackets look against the wall color. The rhinestone wall color is a very light gray, almost a silver tint.

You can see the colors of the tile a little better in this picture.

I got a new camera lens and attempted to use my custom white balance setting for these photos. I think I’m liking the  clean crisp effect of using a preset white balance.

Last summer we added natural sand stone colored ceramic tile to the floor.

  5. looks great – I make my husband shower in the basement bathroom each morning and he lays his clothes out in the living room the night before so he’s not rummaging around in the closet in the morning…5 am is just too early to be awake!

    1. I know, 5am is way to early! I agree! You made me laugh about taking a shower in the basement. hehe.

  6. Jessica, that bathroom is amazing! I can’t believe he gets it all to himself! I’m jealous, hubs and I have to squeeze and share a tiny one vanity one shower bathroom ;-).

    1. Thank you Brittany! I can’t believe it either. If the alternative wasn’t that he would still be in our master bath waking me up at 5am every morning, I would have already stolen this bath 🙂

  7. It looks amazing Jessica! The grey calming and those glass tiles ~ WOW! Very well done!

  8. Jessica, absolutely beautiful! Love the venetian tiles, the color palette and that panneling is gorgeous. If your hubby doesn’t want to use the bathroom – I’ll come over and pretend I’m at a spa! Beautiful! x

  9. Jessica, It looks fabulous! I love the glass tiles and how you wrapped them around the wall. It looks like a professional job. The colors all work so well together…I love the color of the vanity and the shelves are gorgeous. Congrats for tackling such a challenging project and seeing it through so beautifully!

  10. Nice job, impressive that you did the walls and tile all by yourself!

    1. Thank you Kim 🙂 I had a lot of practice when I hung the wide pine planks in the family room 🙂

  11. Fantastic job. I am doing a similar tile in my kitchen backsplash (random sizes in green, mauve glass with sand stone and marble, also from Lowes…but I am HIRING it done) I so admire what you did here, Really great job!!!

    1. Thanks Molly Jo! It was a task that was not fun but I’m glad I did it (I say that now, I wasn’t earlier this week!). Have a great weekend!

  12. Beautiful job Jess!!! Love the styling as well :). The grouting of all that tile would have pushed me over the edge. Looks fabulous so your hard work paid off!

    1. Thank you Beth, I’m glad it’s done. I appreciate you stopping by 🙂 Happy Friday!

  13. I LOVE IT, especially as I am mentally preparing to redo a bathroom in our home. It has a shower stall, and I am considering new flooring (since the water under the linoelum has effect the floor boards, which is my motivation for the remodel).

I haven’t thought of tiling in the stall, but I love what you have done. And am thinking this would be perfect, since it is almost like its own little room.

And hanging a regular panel higher, practical!

I am considering doing a yellow, gray, black/white theme in my bathroom (yellow being my favorite color and wanting to use some milk paint on furniture is my excuse).

I did notice that the ceilings seem to have a texture/pattern to them, tell me more, please.

And was the mirror silver or did you do that yourself? Have a mirror, but want it silver.

Thanks for sharing you talent and experience.
    Deb CLaytor

    1. Thank you Deb! I’m glad you liked it 🙂 It sounds like you have a project of your own to do. Send some pictures when you are done! Would love to see them.

    Fabulous job girlfriend!!

  15. WOW GAL!! That is gorgeous, no wonder you almost jumped out of the window!!!!
    Great job to your hubby!!!

  16. You did a great job! love the tiles wrapping around the tiles wrapping around the closet door. the gray on the cabinets is great too. I have been looking for a gray, not to dark & not too light to paint my lowere kitchen cabinets. The color you chose is great. I’m sure your husband appriciates all of your hard work!

  17. I love the bathroom. Can you tell me where to buy the glass shelves?
    Thanks,
    EMME

  18. Love it! Especially the wall treatment! Can’t wait to see tutorial!

  19. What a beautiful room! Thank you for sharing. Can you please tell me where you purchased the silver mirror?

    1. Thank you Jane! The mirror is from 30 years ago 🙂 It was in the house when my parents bought it. Sorry, I have no idea where it came from.

  20. Great Job! Loving the grays 🙂

  21. What a wonderful bathroom. You did a great job!

  22. Jessica!
You rock – that tile wrapped around the wall and up to the ceiling is fabulous! What a statement!

The best part – no more shared bathroom – well worth the wait!

    Kelly

  23. If that was my stunning bathroom I’d probably live in it! xo

  24. WOW, oh my gosh Jessica this looks amazing! Every single details is perfect. The bathroom looks so fresh and clean and a total change from the original. Fabulous.

  25. have been trying to convince my friend to use rhinestone for her bathroom wall, this just MIGHT convince her!

  26. Fantastic job! But, than again any woman who can cut a sofa in half and reassemble it can surely handle a lil’o bath reno. 🙂

Again, a fantastic job well done!

  27. Looks great! Love the door color and walls. Did you mention the color and where you purchased the vanity top?

    1. Thank you! The vanity top is formica with a beveled edge and was installed locally 🙂

  28. Sigh, my bathroom reno drags on… Yours is lovely. Super lovely!

  29. Your bathroom looks great! I love the way you wrapped the tile around the wall and door. It’s attractive and is going to be so easy to keep clean. I’m sure your husband is really enjoying his own space.

  30. I love the bathroom! We did ours last year also with a gray/white theme. I wish I had seen yours first! I definately would have stolen some of your ideas!!

  31. What an amazing transformation Jessica! I love every thing you did. My next project is to try and make something out of our master bathroom… your project provided some great inspiration!

  32. Beautiful bathroom. Something like this would SO be lost on my husband.

The wall treatment is pretty much what would be termed “board and batten”. Usually it seems to have just vertical pieces, but I like your take on the technique.

And such subtle colors! We have a bathroom in that same rose/pink color (and one in avocado), and your transformation gives me hope!

    1. Pink and avocado! I thought I was the only one with a pink bathroom. Good luck with your transformation and thank you for your sweet comment 🙂

  33. I have enjoyed the read. I feel I missed something…This is your husbands’ bathroom and you have you own off the bedroom? Nice, It looks Great!

I cannot believe it, but I am positive that pink sink is exactly like the one in my parents new home. It looks like it is designed to bath a baby. AND, It may be the same wall tile.
The home had a kitchen and 3 and 1/2 baths to be updated. The kitchen is finished. And I helped draw up a new plan for the Master bath. Gutting a bath and 1/2 plus stealing a hallway with no purpose. It turned out wonderful. Now, they just have the pink bath and green bath to go. But, they are tired….maybe next year

    1. Hi Melinda! Yes, this is now my husbands bathroom and mine is the one off our master. One all to myself 🙂 Sounds like you know all about the pink 1970’s bathroom decor 🙂 Good luck with your upcoming projects. I am sure the work will be well worth it in the end! Thanks for stopping by.

  34. Hi Jessica,

What a spectacular makeover!!! Love the choices that you made. We also have 4 generations living in our home. A rewarding and challenging experience. 🙂

I didn’t notice if you said where you got the rug. It looks like the perfect size and color for my smallish secondary bathroom. Did you make it or buy it?

    Be blessed!
    Gloria

  35. We are in the process of buying our first home, and the shower/bathroom will have to be completely remodeled. Intimidating! This gave me great ideas. Thank you so much!

  36. Wow your bathroom looks great! It definitely gave me some inspirations! My husband and I are working on decorating our new home. We try to browse around for more ideas and this is really helping. We bought some really cool home decor accents from this site http://www.worldtohome.com. Now we just have to incorporate what we bought to idea you gave us! ;D

  37. Wow!! This is amazing! Hard work is a pain in the butt, but obviously sooo rewarding!! Love how everything ties in together. Nothing looks cheap. It’s well thought out and so inspiring. We’re buying a house at the end of the year, one that we can renovate ourselves and your tutorials will be an awesome guide to look fabulous without spending thousands. Thank you for sharing 🙂

  38. nancy meehan says:

I just had a new washer/dryer installed in my 8×9 bathroom. I have a shower stall (the size of an old telephone booth) and the new W/D across one side of the room.

Opposite that is a very tiny one bowl sink, an old metal/glass 4 shelves, holding all my makeup, my hair brushes, delicate feminine things, deoderant, …anyway, you get the point !

This is the ONLY bathroom for the first AND second floors.

I love your Bathroom, the right colors, the wide sink with plenty of storage, drawers that keep so much stuff out of sight ! I feel like I can do a project like that myself, and then remember I am 66 years old; with RA, severe osteoarthritis !
(I just keep thinking I am the same age as I was when I was 28 years old).

I thank you and ALL your beautiful and functual ideas.

    Nancy M.

  39. Wow! What a big difference! Love it! I have the same white hand towels! I love the design on them! Beautiful!

  40. Hello Jessica!
I came across your bathroom remodel while searching for ideas for my own bathroom. I woul love to recreate the floating glass shelving you did in your bathroom. Where did you find the glass?

    Thanks!
    Sarah

  41. This is absolutely beautiful. My husband and I are planning to gut out bath. After getting multiple estimates from contractor (over $7000), we think we may be going DIY. The enclosed shower with storage to the right is just what we were thinking. Your tile idea was not but I think it’s now on the radar. Thanks for sharing!

  42. love the mosaic glass tile! Did you purchase it online at lowes or in store? I can’t seem to find it on their site with the name.

    blessings,

    jenn.

  43. Hello! I was wondering, what is the size of the shower? The remodel looks amazing.
    Thank you,
    Annie

  44. I love your bathroom makeover, and I want to use a curtain as well, you mentioned hanging a liner with drapery rings, could you tell me please how to do that? I am new to DIY projects. I’m tired of waiting for people to help me.

  45. Priscilla says:

    Hi!

I love the glass shelves. Can you tell me where I can find them? I haven’t been able to find anything deeper than 5 inches.

    Thanks,
    Priscilla

  46. Love this! Where did you find a shower curtain liner that is 84″ long but small in width?

  47. Rose Szymanski says:

I am in the midst of getting bids for adding a shower to my small bathroom. I lOVE this and plan to use it as an inspiration. What is the shower stall (exactly)? The ones I’m looking at, at Home Depot and Lowe’s, don’t exactly look like this. Thanks!

    1. Thank you! It’s just a standard sized shower stall and we tiled above and around it 🙂

  48. Where did you get the glass shelves and brackets?

  49. Penny Lee says:

What a phenomenal job you. did! I have been unsuccessful at finding a brushed nickel, multi-tiered, hotel style towel rack for a blank wall above my toilet. Your glass shelves idea could be a great alternative. I want the bottom shelf to hold glass jars filled with bath salts and soaps, the middle shelf to hold clean, folded towels and the top shelf to hold taping plants. If you can share more details about how you achieved the glass shelving, I would greatly appreciate it.
