Many of you emailed asking if a “paint kit” is worth it or if purchasing all the paint supplies (like we did) ala-cart is better.

We have used the Rust-oleum paint kits in the past (at our previous house) and the kit did a great job. The ones I am featuring below have great reviews so you can check them out for yourself.

Are kitchen cabinet paint kits worth the money?

Although cabinet painting kits are sold as an all-in-one solution for beginners, are they really worth the money?

Yes and no.

Since the kits only cost around $70-80 for 100 square feet of cabinetry, that’s a cheap way to transform your kitchen on the fly.

The great thing is that they include paint, rollers, and brushes, so you can start quickly.

How much does it cost to paint your kitchen cabinets yourself?

To see how they compared, I ran the numbers for refinishing your cabinets and buying the supplies separately.

To keep things comparable, I priced out 100 sf (the same as what one paint kit would cover) with the paint products we used in our recent kitchen cabinet project. Remember, I did not use a paint kit, we purchased everything separately.

  • One gallon of my favorite kitchen cabinet paint brand (Benjamin Moore Advance) – $70
  • Primer $100
  • Painting tools (~$4 for foam rollers, a good angled brush like the Wooster soft-tip or Purdy $15, and a paint tray $1-2) – $15

Total: under $200 (keep in mind this is about 100sf cabinets)

Approximately double the cost to purchase separately but you have more options when it comes to colors and brush quality.

We did not use a painting kit for our current kitchen painting project but we did use the Rust-oleum painting kit at our previous house when we initially painted our kitchen cabinets.

You can read all about our 2 part kitchen renovation serious at our previous house but clicking through to this post, DIY kitchen remodel.

Since most kits just bundle the paint and necessary tools, you’d be able to save money and buy the best quality tools if you shop separately. You may need to spend more to buy a full container of brush heads, etc, but the total price for the materials used will be less.

Although the prices might be a bit higher if you purchase supplies separately, the quality of your results will be amazing if you paint like a professional painter and follow the proper steps. It’s really not that hard – it just takes a little time!

Like anything, there are pro’s and con’s – purchasing a paint kit is the best option if you are on a strict budget, have little time and are newer to paint cabinets.

The kits take all of the guess work out of the project and you will still get amazing results.

Which is the best kitchen cabinet paint kit?

Still not convinced you can paint your cabinets on your own? The two kits I’d try are Nuvo Titanium Infusion Kit or Rust-Oleum!

The thing I like about the Nuvo cabinet paint kit is that it mostly follows the proper procedure for painting your cabinets. You won’t have to worry about finding the right tools or materials, and it’s surprisingly affordable!

The kit retails for about $80 on Amazon – perfect for a tight budget. If your kitchen is large, you need to take that into consideration with how many “paint kits” you will need.

The Rust-Oleum Transformations Kit is an entirely different type of product. Unlike Nuvo, which follows traditional painting steps, Rust-Oleum has 4 step process that helps you prepare your cabinets and create a durable, long-lasting finish.

The protective coat will make it look like you bought new cabinets instead of refinishing your old ones!

Whether you decide to use a kit or do this paint job yourself, remember to go slow, take your time, and clean your cabinets before you do anything else!
