Our house looked great for about two days after I finished styling it for summer. Then real life crept back in, stuff everywhere, and it was back to reality, the way it always does around here.

But those two good days are worth chasing, especially when you land on a palette that makes every room feel connected instead of random. Ours this year is navy, pink and coral, and the trick that ties it all together across three completely different rooms is simpler than you’d think: one steady white trim color (Sherwin-Williams Extra White) running through every single room, paired with a different accent wall color in each. Sea Salt in the dining room, Westhighland in the family room, Drizzle in the kitchen. Same white thread tying it all together, so navy, coral and blush pink get to be as bold as they want without the house feeling chaotic.

My mom enjoyed watching all the summer decor enter the house as I was pulling pieces from my blog studio, she loves pillows just like me so that was her favorite part.

Summer Navy + Pink + Coral Styling Tips

Our dining room got a makeover last summer, and the addition of the gorgeous white trestle table and seagrass chairs made decorating this summer a breeze. Mixing navy and white ceramic along with my great gram’s blue willow china captured a casual coastal theme while keeping it real. Real meaning, we use all this stuff.

It’s not just for show. I’m not a fan of overly beachy decor and prefer more of an elegant coastal look, and using what I had from my great gram plus inexpensive white dishware from HomeGoods got me there.

Multi-Purpose TV Room

If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that we recently moved my grandparents from the in-law studio area in the garage to the main part of the house, because of their failing health. That meant moving rooms, switching out furniture, and most importantly, creating another TV room.

I haven’t shared this room in a while because it’s been a hodge podge of stuff and wasn’t really functional. It was full of toys, mismatched furniture, kind of a mess. I picked up a new pink and orange rug from HomeGoods, so soft and absolutely gorgeous, plus two new side accent chairs for additional seating.

Here’s the part I didn’t name at the time, because I don’t think I fully saw it myself yet: this room is a real-life example of what I now call Pre-Crisis Infrastructure. When you know aging-in-place is coming, or it’s already arrived like it had for us, the room can’t stay “temporary until we figure it out.”

A hodge podge of mismatched furniture and no real seating works fine for a few weeks. It does not work as the permanent backdrop for a household that now includes grandparents with failing health who need somewhere comfortable to actually be, not just somewhere to store the overflow.

Finishing this room, giving it real seating, real storage, a rug that could survive foot traffic from four generations, wasn’t a decorating choice. It was infrastructure. It’s the difference between a house that’s reacting to whatever crisis hit last month and a house that’s actually built for the people living in it.
