Refinishing a rocking chair is one of the easiest ways to breathe new life into an old piece of furniture, and choosing the right paint color makes all the difference. Navajo White is a warm, creamy off-white that adds a timeless touch while keeping things fresh and inviting.
Whether you’re updating a vintage thrift find or revamping a well-loved chair in your home, I’ll show you exactly how I refinished my VERY old rocking chair in just a couple hours with paint!

How To Spray A Rocking Chair With A Spray Painter
This beautiful off-white paint looks great in any area. Regardless of your application method, you’ll get a luxurious matte finish. I prefer to use a paint sprayer for even coverage and fewer coats of paint.
Setting up the HomeRight sprayer takes less than 5 minutes, and cleanup is so simple. I can’t even imagine painting this chair by hand. Now that would be painful! The sprayer allows you to achieve a custom finish very quickly.
For outdoor use, choose latex exterior paint as the base for your paint color. Because the paint is so durable, you can get away with using just the exterior paint and not worrying about the topcoat!
Equipment Needed:
- Paint Sprayer (my updated paint sprayer model)
- Cloth
- Sandpaper or sanding block
Materials Needed:
- Navajo White paint ( see my paint review here of navajo white)
Step By Step Instructions:
1. Using sandpaper, sand away any wear and tear to rough up the texture of the chair and give the paint a flat surface to stick to.
2. Wipe away any dust with a cloth.
3. Fill your paint sprayer with paint and spray two thin coats.
4. Let the paint dry completely before using the chair.
The dry time is minimal as the paint sprayer leaves a fine smooth finish.
Once the first coat was dry, I applied another.

As I transformed this sad rocking chair into something beautiful in no time, I couldn’t help but appreciate the magic of a good makeover.
There’s something so satisfying about bringing new life to an old piece instead of tossing it out.
I’m all for making the most of what we already have!

Beautiful! I love the little nook it is sitting in. We have a couple of those rocking chairs and they are so comfortable, well worth saving! 🙂 I had to laugh at your paint splattered leg, I spend half of my life like that! 🙂
I know right? Paint everywhere! 😉
Jessica I love how the rocker turned out. Wow! I think I am going to invest in one .. You are the umpteenth person … Lol…to write about how easy it is to paint with. Good job ! 🙂
haha thanks Melissa!!! 🙂
It looks amazing! Did you have to dilute the paint at all for the sprayer or could you just spray as is?
Hi Ashley!! I spray as is 😉 Super easy.
I know this is an older post, love to hear the amount of time invested in sanding? I have 8-12 director chairs I saved from the dump. I feel overwhelmed every time I think about how to sand -8 are painted white, and a lot of spots its worn out. 4 are wood and varnished. I had 2 power hand held, and it seemed a project just trying to sand one?
I didn’t invest a ton of time ! Maybe 20 minutes?
I do not have a power gun for stapling. Can you suggest an alternative?
Can you please share exactly which Home Right Spray model you used? Perhaps give the model number.
There are so many out there, and many have horrible reviews…..
Thanks
Hi there! This project was a few years ago at my old house and I left the sprayer for the new owners! I am not sure on the model # but I can look back in the post to see if I showed a close up of the product that may indicate the type of sprayer.
