Does your kitchen need a makeover? Today I am going to share how to start the kitchen renovation process. If you have been following us for a while, you know we gutted our kitchen two summers ago and added new cabinets, flooring and countertops. We tore down walls and made the biggest mess. It wasn’t pleasant but wow, it was sure worth it. We actually did the work ourselves but that is not always feasible for the average homeowner. Today I am sharing a great resource that can help you soup to nuts with a kitchen renovation. Whether you are just replacing a floor or cabinets, Sears Home Services has you covered.
I know when we were thinking about renovating our 1960’s style kitchen, we were a little overwhelmed with what we wanted, how big to make it and how we were going to address structural details. For us, we ripped down a wall which meant we needed to address the existing header in the kitchen and that involved an engineer who specialized in ensuring the structural integrity of the house. Sears Home Services can help you with everything right down to choosing paint colors.
One of the hurdles that we had to overcome was choosing the right kind of counter top and I seriously couldn’t have written this article any better myself. Sears Home Services spells out How to Choose a Countertop with the pro’s and con’s and it’s a must read if you are considering new countertops.

One of the biggest hurdles is deciding how to create an amazing Kitchen Layout. Check out this kitchen article which gives you 9 different kitchen layout options. I personally like the one with the island. We LOVE our island and it’s literally where everyone congregates in our home. The only down fall to an island is everyone drops all their stuff on it! -ha. Everyone in our house seems to think it’s a great place for their book bags, mail, computers or whatever else seems to be in their hands as they walk through the kitchen ;).
A few of the issues that we ran into when renovating our kitchen was the different ceiling heights in the two rooms (where we tore down the wall), leveling the floor, what type of floor was best for our existing subfloor and how to make the cabinets appear taller because our ceiling height is a little under the standard the 8′ foot ceiling height. I found a great article on the Sears Home Services site that address many of these issues and gives some great tips on How to Design the Ultimate Kitchen.

On another note, my gram was transported last Friday to a rehab facility to determine if they can help her build up her strength in her leg where they found a cancerous tumor. As of today, she is working on maneuvering from a bed to a wheelchair without putting pressure on her bad leg. Many of you know, she is in the same Nursing Home facility where my grandfather is so they get to visit with each other daily. Although my grandfather has been driving her crazy. -ha. There rooms are a short distance from each other on the same floor and he leaves and comes back every 1/2 hour -ha. She has an appointment soon with her Oncologist at Dana Farber this coming week so hopefully we will know what, if any, treatment options are available. Thank you for your continued support for my gram ;).
