Today I thought I would show  you what I am doing to avoid the winter blues by infusing pops of color into our home and share some inexpensive decorating ideas that won’t break the bank. I don’t know about you but after Christmas, once everything has settled down, I tend to end up in a funk where I feel like my bank account is drained, the house is stark, empty and blah and my body is unmotivated to do anything. A few months ago I announced that I was chosen by Better Homes and Garden to be a pinning pro for two of their pinterest boards. What exactly does that mean? Well, each week I search the BHG website and pin my favorites. I usually have a personal agenda for that week  and it stems from what I am doing in my own home. For instance, if I’m on an organizational kick, you will see me pinning organizational photo’s or like this week, I was pinning ways to add color and texture to a room in an effort to avoid the winter blues. Some of my favorite BHG decorating ideas that I found this past week was this beautiful room with bold pops of pink.

What I love about this space above is a simple  bright colored throw and colorful patterned pillow add instant color and ensure that the neutral space isn’t cold and boring.

Do you have a bedroom that needs a quick pick me up? How about layering in textured bedding, throws and pillows. The colorful velvet pillows and cashmere throw speak cozy and comfy to me!

Another inexpensive way to brighten up a space is to add a bold paint color to a wall. I love how they created bold accent wall in a playroom by adding magnetic paint.

I don’t know about you but I have a ridiculous amount of mis matched boxes and baskets. How about covering some of those boxes with pretty patterned wrapping paper or fabric to store everyday random items. I recently covered some old canvas art work with beautiful yellow fabric in an effort to add an inexpensive pop of color to our bare wall.

My mom and I spent the weekend rearranging furniture in some of our rooms and shopping our home for bright colored accessories to add some life to the space. Don’t be afraid to steel furniture pieces from another room in your home and mix and match. Rearranging furniture gives me that happy pick me up that sometimes I need. Call me crazy, but it makes me feel like I have a fresh new room!

avoid winter blues by mixing and matching colors

The photo above is a perfect example of mixing and matching solids and patterns. When I am mixing and matching patterns and colors, ( I get a little nervous) I find an inspirational photo I love and analyze it. I see three elements of coral and three elements of blue. The solid coral couch, coral ottoman print and coral patterned arm chair. Now this next part is where I get nervous, mixing in another color family along with a new pattern. Yikes! The blueish gray rug and pillows are the same color family but different patterns. Honestly this room is a hodge podge of colors and patterns but looks totally amazing to me! I would definetely need some hand holding to pull together a room like this.

I normally link my sources under the photo but for some reason, they wouldn’t link so here are the BHG image sources. Image 1, Image 2, Image 3, Image 4 and Image 5. Do you follow me on pinterest? Hopefully I have given you some fun decorating ideas where you may be inspired to add  pops of color to a room to avoid the winter blues in your home. My goal is to use what I have and if that means, changing it with paint or pretty colored fabric, then that is what I will do. Woman’s Day and Target will be hosting a “get Jessica’s kitchen look” with a $500 gift card on the Woman’s Day site and Target is giving away a $100 gift card to one of you here this week on our blog.
