It’s a busy time of year for us (and you too I am sure!) and we are attempting to get all of our outdoor spaces setup and looking pretty for the upcoming summer months. We love entertaining on our outdoor patio and it’s the perfect place to host a Father’s Day bbq. I recently shared a video on preparing for a Father’s Day bbq featuring tips on setting up a beverage center and using fun copper plated mugs as serving pieces. Did you see the video? I personally think I am kind of dorky in it but the crew at Wayfair said it was ok! – ha. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t, I would love some feedback. Dorky or not? ;). Father’s Day is right around the corner and as some of you know, our celebrations tend to be on the larger side. Living with four generations under one roof, we usually have one or two dinners a week on our patio or deck. Hosting our Father’s Day annual BBQ will be no different and for us, we prefer to have all of our seating areas (dining and lounge) somewhat close together. My grandparents are not very mobile (especially my gram) and they like being in the center of all the activity so the grilling and seating must be within close proximity.
In a few short weeks, we will be celebrating all the dads in our household right here on our patio and it will be so much fun. Here are a few tips based on how we setup our patio for entertaining.
Create intimate seating areas
Whether you are creating a dining area or lounge area outdoors, it’s important that your furniture be weather resistant. This outdoor wicker dining set from Wayfair is not only beautiful but it’s weather resistant and made from a beautiful wicker resin. I personally love to use outdoor throw pillows on our dining chairs as well. Yes, they may need to be removed when someone sits in them but they add a cozy feel and look good in the chair. Sometimes even an indoor throw blanket looks pretty across the arm or back of a chair. Just be sure to bring indoors at the end of the day. Lanterns in a variety of shapes and textures are also great outdoor accessories.
Outdoor rugs are a must on our patio. They define the seating area and add character and interest to your space. I also love polypropylene rugs because they dry quickly and you can hose them off when dirty. I love that!
Add a heat source
Living in New England means summer nights are many times cool. We always have an outdoor heater on our patio. It’s a great solution for chilly nights and it looks so cool lite up. It’s amazing how much heat these heaters throw. The low setting usually is plenty to keep us comfortable at night.
Cooking Station
This year we created a cooking station near our dining area with a covered grill gazebo. What I love about this gazebo is it creates a large a shaded area and provides shelving and hooks for accessories.
If the dad in your life is the “griller” in your family, a grill and grill gazebo are great Father’s Day gifts too. It’s also something you can use during the summer months too. Kind of a win win all around! Setting up your patio with these elements as a Father’s Day gift surprise would be so much fun! Set up the grilling station with a BIG RED BOW and imagine their surprise ;).
Decorate your space with flowers and accessories

We surround our space with planters filled with colorful annuals and fresh flowers. A variety of ceramic, terra cotta, wire and wooden planters not only provide architectural interest to your space but they keep flowers organized and in their space. We tend to get a lot of wind so the planters keep the flowers grounded preventing them from blowing into the pool or our neighbor’s yard. We also try to encompass pretty linens, in this case a fun striped tablecloth in the grilling area is perfect for Father’s Day. Setting up your patio for entertaining guests doesn’t need to be overly complicated. I always try to keep in mind that creating intimate areas will not only create a cohesive look but keep your guest together and within speaking range.

Wow, I think your backyard is wonderful. I LOVE all the greenery around it. The grill is fabulous as is all of the décor. I hate that I live in an apartment…only a front patio and nothing in the back except our neighbors. We’re not allowed to have grills due to fire concerns, which I understand but, don’t be surprised if I show up at your Father’s Day BBQ, lol. TFS and fueling the dream.
