Changing things around {my home office}

Things wouldn’t be normal around here if we were not changing things around. My husband said never in his life, has he seen a room change so often. It’s true, we change the purpose of our rooms in our house like we change our clothes. That’s what happens when you have so many people under one roof. Needs change, people get older, jobs change and kids grow out of spaces. It’s just the way it is. We are all about adapting to change around here and one of those recent changes happens to be my need for a home office. I started our blog about 4 1/2 years ago simply to keep friends and family updated on life living under one roof with my parents and grandparents. It was never meant to be public or most certainly, never meant to be my job or income. It is one of those fortunate accidents that turned into something great. So after 4 years of working at the kitchen island or my sons little tiny desk, we are emptying out the playroom and turning it into my office. I have so many papers, photography gear, crafting items, decor books and a slew of other things that do not have a home. We are moving the current study/playroom to the basement and combining it with my mom’s den. Here is my mom’s den area in the basement from last Christmas.

This was my little corner as of yesterday. I should have taken a picture of the other side full of stacked papers and random items. What a disaster. As you can see, my son’s little computer desk isn’t even big enough for my desktop computer.

I don’t know why I can only find Christmas pictures of this room but for some reason, that’s all I have. Here is the space below that will become my home office. I honestly have no idea what I will do with so much space.

We have started to empty out the space and so far, we moved the large TV that was on the wall to the basement den and removed a bunch of toys.

This room has seen many changes over the last 4 years. We renovated the existing fireplace a couple years ago and created a fun playroom / study / extra TV room 2 Christmas’s ago. We plan on emptying out the room this weekend and patching the wall (where the TV was) and moving the rest of the furniture and toys out. Hoping to have a new office to share with all of you in the next couple of months. I am not sure what I am going to do with all this space. -ha. One thing is for sure though, filing cabinets and a larger desk are necessary. I am not sure if a wall unit makes sense as we tend to move things around so often. I am thinking maybe a mobile setup. I love the large oversized desks that can be easily moved and the filing cabinets on wheels. Lots to think about. I started an office/workroom pinterest board if you would like to follow along with my pinning inspiration.

    This will be such a great home office space.

  2. That’s great that you are all willing to be flexible and change around the purposes of rooms in your house as the need arises. I’m looking forward to seeing your progress.

  3. I do not recall your having mentioned that gorgeously interesting ceiling………….. we recently redid a closet into home office storage etc. which will look like nothing when we finally get to see what you have done with your redo. very anxiously awaiting the showing.
    How are your grandparents doing ? is grandpa taking any better care of himself ??
    thanks for sharing, maybe I will get some ideas to upgrade my office a bit. it is also where my hsb watches tv sooooooo..

    1. Hi Brenda! The ceiling is actually original to the house. Something they did in the early 70’s. Some people love it, some not so much. -ha. I think home office’s are great as a multipurpose room if you have a large enough space. I will most likely be adding a small TV on one of the book shelves and one or two accent chairs as well. The couch is being moved to my mom’s bedroom/sitting room area. Good luck with your makeover!
