One year ago today, Four Generations One Roof was started. The blog actually started as Nuchey’s Mommy but after a couple months, I changed it to reflect our life as four generations all living together under one roof. I don’t even know why I started a blog to be honest, it just kind of happened by accident around my son’s 5th birthday. I was searching for Star Wars birthday ideas and came across some blogs that posted birthday parties, decorations and fun games. After finally understanding what a blog actually was, it dawned on me that having a blog would be a great way to keep my family and friends updated on our renovations and what life was like living with my parents and grandparents.
In 2005 I gave up my career, got married and started a family. In 2008, my husband, son and I moved in with my parents while we planned on looking for a home closer to my husbands work and honestly, more affordable. If someone had told me that in 2012 we would still be living with my parents and grandparents, I would have thought they were crazy. Well, “us” crazies are all still together with an addition of a blog, facebook and twitter page. That makes me laugh that we have a facebook and twitter page. Blogging is a funny thing. At first I thought it was a little strange posting about ones life, projects and randomness but you know what, I love it and it has been a blessing for me. Being a stay at home mom is challenging in many different aspects especially emotionally. After graduating college, starting a career and being financially self sufficient for 11+ years, it was strange at first to stay home and be a mom. It was the best decision I ever made though. Blogging has now given me the opportunity to re-connect and establish something for myself. I am so grateful to all of our readers that visit and leave the sweetest comments . You have no idea how much I appreciate them :).
It’s been a very interesting year to say the least. In the midst of all the day to day things that go on in life, some ridiculously crazy and fun opportunities have come our way because of our blog. Last month our family room and barn doors were photographed for a possible upcoming magazine issue in October (hope to share more soon on that) as well as our ABC World News feature last December 2011. You can see the aired episode here,
Blogging has given me a creative outlet and the gift of so many new friendships. It blows my mind the amount of people who follow our blog and email me when I haven’t posted in a few days saying, “hey, what are you guys doing over there? or “do you guys ever fight or argue with one another?” haha. The answer is, “heck yea!” .
In June of this year I attended the Haven Conference in Atlanta which was amazing. So many of the girls I met were just as wonderful in person as they are on their blogs. I had the pleasure of meeting Beth who I owe a huge debt of gratitude for essentially taking me under her wing when I first started blogging and continues to help me navigate through what seems like a “black hole” in the blogosphere. Many thanks as well to Kim who has recently introduced me to many networking opportunities and fills me in on stuff that makes my brain hurt!
This next year I hope to continue to grow and meet new readers, friends and get a handle on the stuff that makes my brain hurt! We are in the middle of renovating our kitchen for another fun collaboration that I hope to announce in December of this year. Storage solutions and incorporating DIY built-ins in the playroom will be the focus for our living spaces as well as creating a sports themed bedroom for my son and a stylish shared bedroom for my step daughters. Their dad has agreed to help paint the bedrooms for the kids so I need to get going on those two projects before he changes his mind :). So there will be many more tutorials and renovating projects to share.
Lastly, I hope to start understanding and figuring out all the intrical aspects of the “behind” the scenes of a blog. While I am a hobby blogger, I am curious of how the “guts” of a blog work. Does that make sense? I look forward to sharing our next year with you and thank you for following along with us :)!
